There are competing theories for the origin of the name “Toby Jug”. It was named after the character of Sir Toby Belch in Shakespeare’s pla. It comes from the French word “tope” to drink hard i. Most likely, it was named after a notorious 18th century Yorkshire drinker, Henry Elwes, who was known as “Toby Fillpot” (or Philpot) and was inspired by an old English drinking song, “The Brown Jug”, which paid tribute to Toby Fillpot, whose ashes were made into Toby’s jug; the popular verses were first published in 1761. 10.25 inches tall. Impressed Doulton markings on the bottom of the character jug states Doulton Lambeth England along impressed production numbers 169753 plus #3726… T has the Artists mark for Eleanor Tosen, ttt with an x. Showcase quality and would make a fantastic gift for the collector in mind!! Light signs of previous ownership should be expected consistent with age.. A wonderful piece in Mint Condition – free of chips, cracks hairlines. Some of the usual production firing flaws to the body that are consistent with this type of ware. Do not have its original box.. A Royal Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Lemonade Jug dating 1886 A finely decorated stoneware jug from the highly collectible antique Royal Doulton line of tableware. Set against the royal blue and brown glaze is an applied decorative band of scrolling acanthus leaves. Glazed in pale greens, blues and browns, the foliate design encorporates flowers, seed heads and birds and is bordered by two bands of pale blue palmette motifs. The jug features a silver mounted rim is hallmarked for Birmingham 1887. Ii8iio The base stamps are :-‘Doulton, Lambeth, England”B. B”4664′ The potter’s mark F. Stands for Florrie Jones, a Senior Assistant at Lambeth for many years. Little is known about her personal life or even how long she worked at Doultons, save that she worked for the company before it became Royal Doulton in 1902, and that she was still there in 1928. It is known that Florrie Jones worked with some of the finest designers, amongst them Eliza Simmance and Vera Huggins. The style of the initials F. Corresponds to her later pieces. History The Royal Doulton Company is an English company producing tableware and collectables, dating to 1815. Operating originally in London, its reputation grew in The Potteries, where it was a latecomer compared to Spode, Wedgwood and Minton.
