There are competing theories for the origin of the name “Toby Jug”. It was named after the character of Sir Toby Belch in Shakespeare’s pla. It comes from the French word “tope” to drink hard i. Most likely, it was named after a notorious 18th century Yorkshire drinker, Henry Elwes, who was known as “Toby Fillpot” (or Philpot) and was inspired by an old English drinking song, “The Brown Jug”, which paid tribute to Toby Fillpot, whose ashes were made into Toby’s jug; the popular verses were first published in 1761. 10.25 inches tall. Impressed Doulton markings on the bottom of the character jug states Doulton Lambeth England along impressed production numbers 169753 plus #3726… T has the Artists mark for Eleanor Tosen, ttt with an x. Showcase quality and would make a fantastic gift for the collector in mind!! Light signs of previous ownership should be expected consistent with age.. A wonderful piece in Mint Condition – free of chips, cracks hairlines. Some of the usual production firing flaws to the body that are consistent with this type of ware. Do not have its original box.. 1886 Royal Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Lemonade Jug
A Royal Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Lemonade Jug dating 1886 A finely decorated stoneware jug from the highly collectible antique Royal Doulton line of tableware. Set against the royal blue and brown glaze is an applied decorative band of scrolling acanthus leaves. Glazed in pale greens, blues and browns, the foliate design encorporates flowers, seed heads and birds and is bordered by two bands of pale blue palmette motifs. The jug features a silver mounted rim is hallmarked for Birmingham 1887. Ii8iio The base stamps are :-‘Doulton, Lambeth, England”B. B”4664′ The potter’s mark F. Stands for Florrie Jones, a Senior Assistant at Lambeth for many years. Little is known about her personal life or even how long she worked at Doultons, save that she worked for the company before it became Royal Doulton in 1902, and that she was still there in 1928. It is known that Florrie Jones worked with some of the finest designers, amongst them Eliza Simmance and Vera Huggins. The style of the initials F. Corresponds to her later pieces. History The Royal Doulton Company is an English company producing tableware and collectables, dating to 1815. Operating originally in London, its reputation grew in The Potteries, where it was a latecomer compared to Spode, Wedgwood and Minton. Its products include dinnerware, giftware, cookware, porcelain, glassware, collectables, jewellery, linens, curtains, and lighting. Dimensions 8″ (20cm) tall by 4″ (10cm) in diameter. Circa 1910 Pair Of Slater Royal Doulton Stoneware Jugs
Circa 1910 Pair Of Slater Royal Doulton Stoneware Jugs. This is a splendid pair of beautifully decorated Royal Doulton jugs with a sea green mottled upper rim & handle and a gilt & turquoise over beige lower portion. The upper and lower rims are a chesnut brown. Both jugs have a height of 8 inches (20.4 cm) and a base diameter of 3.2 inches (8.3 cm). The set weighs 1.64 kg. The vases are chip free. One has a couple of firing cracks – one on the inside and one on the underside – these are to the surface only and do not pass all the way through. Rare Royal Doulton Musical Character Jug Brown Crown Old King Cole
Musical jugs are amongst the most rare Doulton collectables because so few were made over very short time period. The jugs were introduced in the late 1930’s and discontinued by 1945, however because of World War II, the actual number of years they could have been produced is two to three years. There were only six jug models made – Auld Mac, Old Charley, Paddy, Tony Weller and both the brown and yellow version of Old King Cole. They look like the large jug version with a slightly extended base to accommodate the Thorens music mechanism. The music tune is appropriate to the jug. The musical jug Old King Cole is very rare and few come to market each year. Designer: Harry Fenton and Leslie Harradine. Condition: Outstanding example with no chips, no cracks and no repairs; relatively little crazing. The Thorens music mechanism is working properly.
