ROYAL DOULTON SMALL SIZE WATER JUG. “THE JACKDAW OF RHEIMS”. ITEM: Royal Doulton smaller water jug. Very unusual size being half a pint capacity (about 570mls). It is part of the Series Ware collection and of course it is English made. This pattern is called “The Jackdaw of Rheims”, from the “Ingoldsby Legends” a series of verse tales written by Richard Harris Barham in 1840. DESCRIPTION: The jug is conical in shape with a slight taper to the top. It has a round base and the top has grooves either side to house the lid. It has a dark olive green trim around rim, down the sides of the handle and also on the top of the handle. The lid is the same colouring. The jug has the ivy wall on the lower half and a verse quote around the centre. The series is described in Louise Irvine’s Royal Doulton Series Ware reference books(Vol 1, Pages 38-39). This scene is Scene 14 (of 16), “Came limping a poor little lame jackdaw”. Note that the photos provided form part of the description. Any shiny spots or white marks are from the camera shots, not blemishes on the item. Colours of grey, brown, green, black, cream, gold and red. MEASUREMENTS: 16cms high to the top of the lid, 8cms in diameter across the base. CONDITION: No chips, cracks, crazing, restoration or staining. No condition issues that I can see. In excellent condition in my opinion. MARKINGS: The bottom of the jug has a black Royal Doulton lion and crown back stamp. Also, a patent number, “114107” and the registration number, “D2532″ which is hand written. AGE: Ms Irvine states the pattern was produced from 1906 to 1930. This makes the item at least 88 years old, may well be older. GENERAL COMMENTS: Lovely collectable from a by-gone era. This piece of Royal Doulton is in top notch condition, especially considering its age.
