Royal doulton hallmark on bottom as shown. He stands about 3 1/2 tall there is a small bruise on his nose.. Very hard to tell but enlarge photos.. I have discounted this piece by 50.00 for the small bruise.. This is my last piece of the 2 faced jug. Does not take away from its looks. This striking 2-faced jug was designed by Charles Noke and Harry Fenton. A 16th Century German legend was the origin of this character created by Johann von Goethe in his famous story of Faust. Mephistopheles is portrayed as an evil spirit or devil to whom Faust sells his soul. Faust exchanged his soul for the satisfaction of his varied desires in life. A very nice Royal Doulton character jug showing the two faces of Mephistopheles. On one side he is grinning and happy – to the reverse he is miserable , with drooping moustache. There is a motto to the base which describes the reason for these two faces – it can be read using the photos. Coloured in typical high gloss Doulton glazes of brown and pink and beige – very tactile piece. Height – 8 1/2 cms approx. NICE Toby Mug devilish Mephistopheles 2-faced jug by Royal Doulton. Rare 2-faced jug designed by Charles Noke and Harry Fenton. Only produced between 1937 and 1948. Almost 3 ½ inches tall, excellent condition, no chips or cracks. Royal Doulton hallmark is clearly visible on the bottom. Mephistopheles, a demon from German folklore, originally appeared in Fausts legend in the late 16. He happened upon Faust in the woods near Wittenberg, advising Faust not to forgo the promise of heaven. He continued as a character in other literature and tradition, from Goethe to Shakespeare.
