Doulton Lambeth Silicon Ware DCL Scotch Whisky Jug/Decanter-Egyptian Motifs. VGC
A Doulton Lambeth silicon ware jug, decanter or flask. It was made for DCL (The Distillers Company Limited), celebrating their Scotch Whisky winning the Gold Medal at Edinburgh in 1886, a very important advertising feature at the time. A lovely Egyptian frieze featuring horse-drawn chariots and armed warriors in a variety of poses, all between two bands of stylized flowers. The front face shows the Scottish coat of arms, and firms address in a central panel. Impressed on the base Doulton Silicon Lambeth (which dates it to about the 1890s) and 9963. There was much interest at that time in the ancient world and its pottery as excavations were being carried out around the Mediterranean. Silicon ware was peculiar to Doulton, it is similar to stoneware, with a different body and fired at a higher temperature making the production more expensive and the ware is very sturdy. The flask would date from soon after the medal win of 1886. A rare piece, not often seen now. Size: 18.5cm (7¼), about 13cm wide; unpacked, it weighs 920 g. Condition: excellent vintage condition, free of crazing, cracks, repairs. All the decals are very good. On the handle there is a spot where some clear glaze has landed from another pot. No crazing, cracks or chips, a good consistent sound when tapped. Please view all the pictures as they complete the description. While I do my best to reproduce the true colours of the pieces, they will vary slightly from system to system, and in actual viewing they will vary under differing lighting. All white spots are purely light reflections from the camera flash. The item will first be wrapped bubble before packing securely in a solid box with lots of peanuts earthquake proof. Matching (true) pare rare stunning antique Doulton Lambeth Silicon Ware brown vases with the Aesthetic Movement relief. It is in excellent used condition (with some minor invisible chips to the back rim) – only age appropriate ware. Approximately 5.5 tall, no damage. This is true Silicone Ware (made in the 1890’s) and is marked as such. Silicon ware is very sturdy. Further evidence of dating is the makers numbering system. This piece has what is called a “C” number see photo with mark “6687C”. Other pieces are created as late as the 1920’s with less quality. There was much interest at that time in the ancient world and its pottery as excavations were being carried out around the Mediterranean. Hence the Greek Frieze style. This Rare Original Antique piece in Greek Frieze style is marked on the bottom of the jug as Silicon Ware by Royal Doulton foundry and is in Very Nice condition for a piece that was produced in the late 1890’s. It is approximately 5.5″ tall by 5 1/4″ at the widest point and 4 3/4 across the base. There are no chips, cracks or damage of any kind. This is true Silicone Ware and is marked as such. Silicon Ware was peculiar to Royal Doulton. It is similar to stoneware with a different body and fired at a higher temperature making the production more expensive and the Silicon Ware is very sturdy.
