ROYAL DOULTON Very Rare OLD CHARLEY. MUSICAL CHARACTER JUG D5858. Musical jugs are amongst the most rare Doulton collectables because so few were made over very short time period. The jugs were introduced in 1938 and discontinued the following year 1939 because of World War II. There were only six musical jug models made. Auld Mac, Old Charley, Paddy, Tony Weller and both the brown and yellow version of Old King Cole. They look like the large Character jug version only with a slightly more extended base to. Accommodate the Thorens Swiss music player mechanism built into the bottom & The music tune is appropriate to each character. This Old Charley musical character jug D-5858 is in over all VERY GOOD condition considering his AGE and that he has Never been restored or repaired in anyway. He does have some visible crazing on the inside of the jug (which is to be expected in ceramic from this time period) Also he does have a very minor surface scrape. These musical jugs are extremely rare, Very few Actually come to market each year. THORENS SWISS MUSIC BOX SET INTO THE BASE. THIS MUSIC BOX IS in Perfect working order. Simply wind the twist knob and pick it up and it PLAYS Until the end of the song or until you put it down. There is a built in lever that stops the player when it is pushed in. Amazingly It STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL FACTORY STICKER on the bottom! This old Charley jug PLAYS THE Tune “HEAR’S A HEALTH UNTO HIS MAJESTY”.
