Large Royal Doulton Character Jug Chairman Mao Zedong D7288 With COA & Box
Large Royal Doulton Character Jug D7288. This jug is titled “Chairman Mao Zedong” and is numbered D7288. He was designed by Caroline Dadd and modeled by Robert Tabbenor in 2009. It was commissioned by UKI Ceramics as part of The Revolutionaries Series and produced in a limited number of 100; this is jug number 55. Standing at 6.5 inches tall and weighing 2 lb. 8 oz; this is a large-sized jug. This was one of the last character jugs created before Royal Doulton ceased production of their character jug line. Chairman Mao Zedong was born in 1893 and died in 1976. He is known as one of the most influential people of the 20th century. A noted communist revolutionary, he was also a poet, military theorist and most importantly the founding father of The People’s Republic of China. The People’s Republic of China was established in 1949 and he ruled it until his death in 1976. His collection of political policies, communist theories based on Marxist-Leninism and military strategies are known as Maoism. He is remembered as a rather polarizing figure with some people crediting him with taking China from an agrarian society to a world power that improved its education, roles of women and life expectancy. Other compare his rule to that of an Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin in terms of brutality and hold him responsible for the deaths of millions of Chinese people through forced labor, execution and starvation as well as the destruction of traditional Chinese culture. Royal Doulton’s version of Zedong features the famed leader in middle age. His face is round and serious. He is dressed in the the communist uniform of a brown coat and matching hat. The collar of the coat features red embellishments and there is a red star on his hat. The handle is composed of Chinese peasants holding a book and the Chinese flag in the backdrop. (1953-) Born in the Potteries area of England, Robert grew up with the aspiration of becoming an artist. He began working for Royal Doulton in 1973. While his first commissions were figurines, he soon discovered his talent in the character area and worked on numerous pieces for the character jug line. He was instrumental in helping Royal Doulton make the transition to Asia when they moved operations there in 2005 and to date has made more than 60 items for the character line.
