RARE 1940 Royal Doulton Winston Churchill, Large Toby Character Jug Mug, D6170
This is an extremely rare jug by Royal Doulton. Although considered a character jug, this version of Winston Churchill, measuring 6.5 tall with two black handles at the back is actually more like a loving cup. The inscription on the base reads Winston Churchill Prime Minister of England. This loving cup was made during the Battle of Britain as a tribute to the great leader. Unfortunately this jug was considered a poor likeness of Churchill and it is reputed that a friend of the Prime Minister suggested to Royal Doulton that is be withdrawn, making this example extremely rare in todays market. In 1941, Royal Doultons Art Director, Charles Noke, made several more unsuccessful attempts to remodel and recolor the jug with a more youthful face. These attempts are rarely seen as prototypes. Issued from 1940 1941. A note: I do not have the original box, sorry guys! It’s in very good condition. Royal Doulton’Welsh Guardsman. Large character jug Welsh Guardsman. This prototype jug has the Welsh Guards leek badge on the collar and shoulder epaulettes. The plume on the bearskin is modelled differently to depict the white-green-white sectioned plume of the Welsh Guards uniform as opposed to the single white plume on the regular production jug. The draped handle bears the blue and claret colours of the Brigade of Guards. Excellent condition, no chips, cracks or restoration. Prototype backstamp as shown in photo. Height: 8 inches high. What a delightful antique Royal Doulton whiskey flask/jug featuring the Dicken’s character Mr. Pickwick, done in the beautiful brown Kingsware glaze of Charles Noke, in excellent condition for it’s age (about 100 years), no chips or cracks and only very light crazing. Any light spots you see in the picture are just reflections. Royal Doulton mark on bottom, made in England. Check out my other items. And 6-12 week wait in all other countries. The’March Hare’ original factory prototype. Modelled in a straw boater with a five shilling price tag protruding from the hatband. Aside from the different modelling, the jug is decorated in a distinctive colourway of green coat, yellow scarf with white spots, pink nose, brown whiskers, straw coloured boater with red and blue hatband. Artist: Designed by William Harper. Height: Stands 6 inches high. In mint condition , with no damage, no crazing and no restoration. As you can see from enlarging the pictures, the casting and decoration are outstanding.
