In 1934, Royal Doulton revolutionized the collectible market with the introduction of the Character Jug, originally designed by Noke himself. Building on the momentum from their innovative toby jugs of the 1920s, these new Character Jugs captured the public? The debut models, John Barleycorn and Old Charley, quickly gained popularity and were soon joined by a cast of familiar faces. The collection expanded rapidly, introducing smaller jugs in 1935 and a brief medium size in 1938.
