This exceptional character jug is beautifully modelled into the form of the legendary English cricketer W. The characterful sportsman is depicted with a long flowing black beard and moustache and wears a vibrant orange and yellow striped cap. A cricket bat and ball forms the handle of the jug, beautifully completing this delightful cricket-themed piece. This piece has been beautifully modelled and masterfully hand painted with fine attention to detail. Old Charley is in excellent condition. It is a back stamp A, variation No. 2 with a black hat, maroon coat and black polka dot tie. The Jug was commissioned by the Higbee Co. To commemorate the First Anniversary of the Opening of the First Royal Doulton Room Higbee’s, Cleveland, Ohio. Commissioned in 1985 and issued in 1986 in a limited edition of 250 pieces. RARE ROYAL DOULTON LARGE CHARLES DICKENS MULTI CHARACTER DREAM JUG/PITCHER c1933. A large and impressive Royal Doulton pitcher/jug designed by Charles Noke in 1933. The pitcher depicts Charles Dickens day dreaming about a host of characters who have appeared in his novels. Other than Dickens, there are 51 characters depicted whose names appear listed on the base. The handle is depicted as Poor Joe a crossing sweeper in the novel Bleak House. I believe that the mask head spout may be modeled on the fictitious character Jacob Marley the late business partner of Ebenezer Scrooge from the novel A Christmas Carol. The head is shrouded with laurel leaves. An inscription on the side of the pitcher reads’Keep my memories green, Noke’ The pitcher is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The pitcher is 10 1/2″ tall, 9 1/2″ from spout to handle; the unpacked weight is 3lb 13oz. Designed by Max Henk, issued 1959 – 1969. “Mikado” is the ancient title for the emperor of Japan, beginning with the reign of the Mikado Jimmu in 660 B. Believed by many to have descended from the all-powerful Sun Goddess, the same family line has been traced through 124 reigns.
