Pickwick Kingsware whiskey decanter/flask/jug from the early 1900s. This jug is just shy of 8 inches high. It is about 13 inches in circumference. It is missing the original stopper. It is in good condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. There is light crazing underneath the glaze that is common in these jugs due to age. This jug is a beautiful chestnut brown, done in the Kingsware glaze by Charles Noke. It features two characters; Mr. Pickwick on one side of the jug and Sammy on the other. On the bottom it has the Royal Doulton England lion/crown stamp. Please view the photos. There options will be more expensive than the rates listed below. You will see that it is a very dark red colourway as opposed to the usual orange. I had spent my entire collecting career seeking to find a prototype version of general Gordon and was delighted to finally acquire it! This exact jug features in the supplement to’A Century of Royal Doulton Character & Toby Jugs’ book produced by Steve Mullins and David Fastenau. A copy of the photograph and page from that book is produced above. The General Gordon jug was commissioned by UK International Ceramics. As a further sign of authenticity this jug has’UK International Ceramics Copy’ handwritten. This jug has been my absolute pride and joy but needs must and it has to go. Large Royal Doulton Character Jug The Fisherman Genuine Prototype Jug
This is a once in a blue moon opportunity to acquire a genuine large Royal Doulton prototype character jug of The Fisherman. This jug is genuine prototype jug. It was never put into production and was not continued with for reasons unknown. It features in the excellent book’A Century of Royal Doulton Character and Toby Jugs’ produced my Steve Mullins and David Fastenau and a copy of the entry is produced in the photos above. The Fisherman was prototyped in 1968 (so originates from the golden era of Doulton character jugs) and was produced by David Biggs. The Mullins book suggests that only one is known to exist, but this is a second example. What is more desirable about this jug is that it differs slightly from the one in the Mullins book, as one would expect when several prototypes were being produced. This jug has a more square jawline and lighter features, as well as blue/grey coat and hat. I have attached several photos of the base however for you to judge for yourself. Aside from that there is no damage, chips, cracks, blemishes or evidence of other restoration anywhere on the jug. It truly is a piece of Royal Doulton history and a work of art! I shall be very sad to see him go from my collection, and I very much hope whoever buys the jug gets as much pleasure from owning it as I did!
