Gladiator D6550 – Large – Royal Doulton Character Jug. Designed by Max Henk, issued 1961 – 1967. Size: 7.75H (Large) Gladiators were trained warriors who fought battles against each other or animals to entertain the ancient Romans. They first appearing around 264 B. Gladiators used many different types of weapons including an oblong shield, a helmet with visor and a stabbing sword about two feet long. Others fought with only a net and a trident, a three-pronged spear. Although gladiators usually fought until one was killed, the losers life could be spared if the spectators waved their handkerchiefs; otherwise they turned their thumbs down, a practice continued today to express disapproval. This Royal Doulton Gladiator character jug, wears the full armor of his profession. The handle is formed by his shield and gladius, Latin meaning sword from which his name is derived. I have owned this jug for almost 50 yrs. It was a present from a wonderful lady and has been in a box wrapped in a towel for most of its life. It is scratch less, chip less, and probably as perfect and beautiful as the day it was made in England. Any white spots you see in the pictures are light reflections from the high intensity lights I use to take the pictures, not from any chips, because there are none on this piece.
