Here is a rare example of a Royal Doulton’Old Charley’ musical toby jug, believed to have only been produced between 1938 and 1939 (Pattern D5858). It is larger than the usual small’Old Charley’ character jugs seen advertised: height to top of handle 15cm (6in), width across handle to spout 17.5cm (7in), shortest measurement across rim 12.5cm (5in). The base contains a Thorens Swiss musical movement that plays a tune when the jug is lifted up – the original factory label warning not to immerse the movement in water is still present. The rim of the base is marked with’Royal Doulton – Made in England’ and also the title of the tune. Heres a Health unto His Majesty. The jug is in very good condition with no chips or obvious cracks or crazing in the glaze. The wooden cover to the musical movement shows some signs of wear around the winder. The musical movement still works well. If you have any questions just message me.
