Ugly Duchess D6599 – Large – Royal Doulton Character Jug. Royal Doulton Character Jug, Ugly Duchess D6599 (green, purple, and pink coloration). Designed by Max Henk. Series: Alice in Wonderland, issued 1965 – 1973. Size: 6.75H (Large). This is a rarely seen character jug from the Alice in Wonderland Series. Lives in Wonderland and plays croquet with the Queen using live hedgehogs for balls, flamingoes for mallets and playing-card soldiers, who double over to serve as the arches. This character jug was designed by Max Henk who referred to an illustration of the Ugly Duchess by Sir John Tenniel who in turn is believed to have used as a source the painting “An Old Woman” by Flemish artist Quentin Massys. This one was acquired new in 1969. It has been used only for display and is in perfect condition.
