Up for your consideration this Vintage 1940 Royal Doulton Winston Churchill Prime Minister of Great Britain Jug. It’s in a very good condition for it’s age – no chips, cracks or repairs. It’s measures 5½” tall, 4¼” from front to back including the handle and 2½ from side to side. Marked underside with Royal Doulton 1930 logo / Winston Churchill / Prime Minister / of Great Britain / – 1940. This jug depicting a seated Winston Churchill is a classic item that has found its way into many homes. If one owns a piece of porcelain Churchilliana, chances are it’s this well executed, hand painted piece. After this run, Royal Doulton resumed production of the jug postwar. Of all Churchill collectibles, these famous jugs had by far the longest production run. Manufacture did not finally end until 1991. The original 1940 run was of limited production. It is immediately distinguished (as shown above) from subsequent postwar production runs by the identification of Churchill as “Prime Minister of Great Britain” and the “1940” date. All subsequent productions are solely marked Winston Churchill. Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British statesman, soldier, and writer who was twice Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, from 1940 to 1945 during the Second World War, and 1951 to 1955. Apart from 1922 to 1924, he was a Member of Parliament from 1900 to 1964 and represented a total of five constituencies. Ideologically an adherent to economic liberalism and imperialism, he was for most of his career a member of the Conservative Party, which he led from 1940 to 1955. One of the 20th century’s most significant figures, Churchill remains popular in the UK and the rest of the Anglosphere. He is generally viewed as a victorious wartime leader, who defended liberal democracy against the spread of fascism, and as a liberal reformer who spurred the creation of the modern welfare state. However, recent scholarship has been more critical of Churchill, especially with regards to his views on race, and his unwavering commitment to British imperialism. Nonetheless, historians and the British public often rank Churchill as one of the greatest prime ministers in British history. I found no significant condition issues with this item, but signs of previous use and ownership should be expected consistent with its vintage timeline and should be taken into consideration with age and ownership.
