It developed from a partnership between John Doulton, Martha Jones and John Watts, in 1815, with a factory at Vauxhall Walk, Lambeth, London. In 1820, the trade name changed to Doulton & Watts; and in 1853 took the name Doulton & Co, following the retirement of John Watts, merging with the company founded by John’s son Henry, with premises at Lambeth High Street.
