Uncatalogued Royal Doulton Character Jug Pearly Girl In White’A’ Stamp. This is a Royal Doulton character Jug of the Pearly Girl. This is the small version of the rare jug, which began to be issued in 1946, and was designed by Harry Fenton. Pearly Girl is the female counterpart of Pearly Boy. The handle of this jug is a hat feather. The more common Pearly Girl jugs wear a blue or brown jacket and a pink or maroon hat which makes this particular piece exceptional as it is in the white. The’A’ stamp confirms it as being a “Pearly Girl” rather than the similar “‘Arriet”. The Charlton Standard catalogue (10th edition) of Royal Doulton Jugs has a white glaze Pearly BOY mentioned as’Extremely Rare’ with no price guide. In the same guide there is no mention of the a White glaze Pearly GIRL so would rate beyond’Extremely Rare’. Dimensions The piece measures 3.5 inches (8.7cm) wide, 3 inches (7.5cm) deep and 3.5 inches (8.7cm) in height. The jug weighs 132 grams. Condition As can be seen, there is a small firing crack on the interior of the jug – it does not show through to the other si de. This would be one reason why it is not colour glazed – see below. The jug is otherwise in good order with no cracks, chips or crazing. White Jugs There are three possible reasons why white Royal Doulton toby jugs may exist. According to Doulton & Co.
