FACTS ON HARRY SIMEON who worked for Doulton 1896 – 1936: Harry Simeon, was one of Doultons most versatile and talented artists and many Doulton collectors are impressed by the diversity of his designs.. After his studies were complete. Harry joined Doultons Lambeth studio in 1896.. Harrys bold linear designs were ideally suited to the raised tube-lining and pigment brush line methods used at Doulton in the early 1900s.. He designed an extensive series of tobies, tobacco jars, ash pots, ink wells and candlesticks.. The stoneware toby jugs made at the Lambeth factory were also modeled by Harry Simeon. His inventiveness showed at its most brilliance in the range of Toby wares he began in 1924, when he took the traditional English Toby jug. Keen toby jug collectors seek out all the different color and modeling variations that exist in this popular series from all around the world. Simeon’s asssociation with Doulton came to an end in 1936. A few years ago the Victoria and Albert Museum in London were delighted to receive a collection of Harry Simeon’s work from his daughters. So Harry Simeon is well represented at this world famous museum. This fabulous, small stoneware piece features the olive green top of this jug showing the words Marriage Day above a smiling face. When flipped over, the brown reveals the words After Marriage inscribed above a frowning face.. Impressed Doulton markings on the bottom of the character jug along with numbers 8595.. Showcase quality and would make a fantastic gift or display piece. Light signs of previous ownership should be expected consistent with age.. Pictures were taken to view.. If there is a problem and unable to pay within the 4 day time frame, feel free to contact me, we can certainly work something out… But PLEASE BE HONEST… The item “ROYAL DOULTON LAMBETH Stoneware SIMEON TOBY JUG Marriage Day/After Marriage 8595″ is in sale since Tuesday, December 19, 2017. (1793 – 1873), who had previously been employed at the nearby Fulham Pottery. He initially had two partners, Martha Jones and John Watts, the former of who left the company in 1820, and the latter in 1854. He began by producing practical and decorative stoneware, such as bottles and sewer pipes from his small pottery 1835 – John’s son Henry. (1820 – 1897) joined the company and the production of stoneware items was expanded to include laboratory articles, sanitary ware and drainpipes. 1850s – John Doulton began experimenting with a more decorative pottery items. Many glazes and decorative effects were developed including faience, impasto, silicon, carrara, marqueterie, chine, and rouge flambe. 1860s – Doulton began to revive earlier types of stoneware, such as copies of 18th-century vessels. The famous salt-glazed wares with blue decoration first appeared in 1862. Through Henry Doulton, the pottery became associated with the Lambeth School of Art directed by John Sparkes from about 1866. He trained the sculptor George Tinworth who joined Doulton as the first resident sculptor in 1867. Tinworth enjoyed a long career at the Lambeth studio, producing a wide range of figures, vases, jugs, tankards and reliefs, as well as fountains and monumental sculptures. The international popularity of the art pottery produced at Lambeth led to the number of art potters increasing from six in 1873 to 345 in 1890, including such famous names as Frank Butler, Eliza Simmance, Arthur Barlow and his sisters Hannah and Florence Barlow. 1877 – Henry Doulton acquired Pinder, Bourne & Co. A pottery on Nile Street, Burslem, Staffordshire, to manufacture tableware and ornamental ware beginning the long association with The Potteries. 1897 – Henry Doulton died and son Henry Lewis Doulton took over control of the company. The company continued to hire talented artists including the next art director Charles Noke, Harry Tittensor, Joseph Hancock, and many others. 1901 – The company was granted the Royal Warrant by Edward VII. Production continued at the Lambeth factory until 1956, after which Doulton concentrated on their activities at Burslem. 1960s – saw rapid expansion of the company during which it made a series of acquisitions including Minton China, a company founded in 1793, and Dunn Bennett, a company founded in 1876 manufacturing hotel ware. These were followed by Webb Corbett and John Beswick. 1990s – The company made further acquisitions in the 1990s but sales were stagnant and in 1997 the company was forced to restructure, cutting its workforce and range of products. Large parts of the production process moved overseas to Thailand. Losses continued despite further attempts to cut costs, including closing the Nile Street Burslem factory in 2005, and the company went administration in 2009. It is now part of WWRD Holdings Ltd. The name being an acronym for the main components of the business: Waterford, Wedgwood and Royal Doulton. An aerial view of the Nile Street Works c1931. Free Local Pick-Up in Oakville!
