Royal Doulton’Winston Churchill. Large character jug Winston Churchill. This jug has a plain white flag on the handle as opposed to the regular production Union Jack. The bowtie is navy blue, without white dots. Excellent condition, no chips, cracks, crazing or restoration. Prototype backstamp as shown in photo. Height: 7 inches high. Musical jugs are amongst the most rare Doulton collectables because so few were made over very short time period. The jugs were introduced in the late 1930’s and discontinued by 1945, however because of World War II, the actual number of years they could have been produced is two to three years. There were only six jug models made – Auld Mac, Old Charley, Paddy, Tony Weller and both the brown and yellow version of Old King Cole. They look like the large jug version with a slightly extended base to accommodate the Thorens music mechanism. The music tune is appropriate to the jug. The musical jug Old King Cole is very rare and few come to market each year. Designer: Harry Fenton and Leslie Harradine. Condition: Outstanding example with no chips, no cracks and no repairs; relatively little crazing. The Thorens music mechanism is working properly. “King Edward VII” D6923 Limited Edition. For sale is a Rare Limited Edition Royal Doulton Character Jug “King Edward VII” D6923 (red, gold and white coloration). Designed by William K. Issued 1992 in limited edition of 2,500 of which this is 306. In this jug, King Edward VII is shown wearing a crown and all his finery. The handle comprises the traditional Royal Doulton Backstamp of the crown and lion. This is a rare piece is excellent condition highly sought after by collectors and investors. The 1920s had already seen Doultons new take on the traditional toby jug, but it was these new Character Jugs that really caught the publics imagination. In 1934 the first jugs, John Barleycorn and Old Charley, were introduced and were swiftly followed by many other familiar faces. The range was quickly expanded to include small size jugs in 1935, and then a short lived medium size in 1938. The late 1930s also saw the introduction of the first Character Jug derivatives including tobacco jars, musical jugs and even tea pots featuring the most popular characters.
