Three Doulton Lambeth stoneware jugs. Issued in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee (60 years) of Queen Victorias Rein there are two panels on each jug showing the Young & Old Queen. I have three sizes in this set 9” by 7” spout to handle, 7” by 6 1/4” spout to handle & lastly 6” by 5” spout to handle. The largest is hard to find & does not come up very often. These are all free from restoration but the smallest has a chip to the rim as pictured. A super scarce Royal Doulton Old Charley tobacco jar D5844 – issued between 1937 and 1960 this one was issued in 1940 – see the 13 to the right of the base stamp, you add that to 1927 [the first year the date coding system was used] and hey presto – made in 1940! Designed by Charles Noke Approx 14cms (5 1/2″) tall Approx 14.5cms (5 3/4″) diameter Condition: No obvious crazing. Presents as perfect, but has a restored lid (only detectable by the not “gloss” finish of the paint on the lid when compared to the jar itself). Looking extremely closely with a trained eye, there has been some chipping to the edge rim of the lid – and it has been conserved, professionally to museum standard. There is no rubber grommet/washer to the inner rim of the jar (they perish over decades, being rubber) and close inspection with a trained eye reveals a slight hairline on the inner rim (where the jar seals – probably has been overtightened at some stage in it’s life). Overall this is a very scarce, early item, and in a cabinet, in a collection will present beautifully – and the bonus is that you are not having to pay the really high price of a truly perfect example. What I RECOMMEND is not screwing the lid down – just placing it inside the jar and blu tacking it in place (or sourcing a rubber grommet to fit the inner rim so you don’t have the pressure of the lid tight against the jar). Realistically speaking, these are so rare, finding a better example could take decades. Which is included on all of our pieces. Offered for your consideration is this presentation jug ” Dickens Dream”. Height of the jug is approximately 10.5. Considering its age of 85 years it is in excellent overall condition. Coloration is great – the pictures do not do show that aspect of the jug very well. This jug was not offered as a limited edition but most likely fewer than 1000 were made and considering the war years etc. Since it was produced probably many of the jugs were destroyed.
