Rare Royal Doulton'march Hare' Prototype Character Jug
Modelled in a distinctive straw boater with a five shilling price tag protruding from the hatband as opposed to the simpler approved hat with barley stalks in the hatband (as shown above). This version was presumably rejected due higher production costs. Aside from the different mould, the jug is decorated in a distinctive colourway of green coat, yellow scarf with white spots, pink nose, brown whiskers, straw coloured boater with red and blue hatband. Designed by William Harper. Stands 6 inches high. With no damage, no crazing and no restoration. As you can see from enlarging the pictures, the casting and decoration are outstanding. Produced as a promotional item for the D&J McCallum Distillery, this rare Doulton Kingsware jug dates from around 1930’s. Measuring just under 7 tall, the jug is in excellent condition and is free from any damage, cracks or repairs. Under close inspection there appears to be a very minor manufacturing flaw to the handle (see images), this little mould crease is fully glazed over and is purely noted for total condition accuracy. Age crazing is present in certain areas but this is very light and extremely minimum given its rich glaze and age. Overall this is a excellent example of this very desirable Kingsware jug. ROYAL DOULTON Very Rare OLD CHARLEY. MUSICAL CHARACTER JUG D5858. Musical jugs are amongst the most rare Doulton collectables because so few were made over very short time period. The jugs were introduced in 1938 and discontinued the following year 1939 because of World War II. There were only six musical jug models made. Auld Mac, Old Charley, Paddy, Tony Weller and both the brown and yellow version of Old King Cole. They look like the large Character jug version only with a slightly more extended base to. Accommodate the Thorens Swiss music player mechanism built into the bottom & The music tune is appropriate to each character. This Old Charley musical character jug D-5858 is in over all VERY GOOD condition considering his AGE and that he has Never been restored or repaired in anyway. He does have some visible crazing on the inside of the jug (which is to be expected in ceramic from this time period) Also he does have a very minor surface scrape. These musical jugs are extremely rare, Very few Actually come to market each year. THORENS SWISS MUSIC BOX SET INTO THE BASE. THIS MUSIC BOX IS in Perfect working order. Simply wind the twist knob and pick it up and it PLAYS Until the end of the song or until you put it down. There is a built in lever that stops the player when it is pushed in. Amazingly It STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL FACTORY STICKER on the bottom! This old Charley jug PLAYS THE Tune “HEAR’S A HEALTH UNTO HIS MAJESTY”. This Rare Original Antique piece in Greek Frieze style is marked on the bottom of the jug as Silicon Ware by Royal Doulton foundry and is in Very Nice condition for a piece that was produced in the late 1890’s. It is approximately 5.5″ tall by 5 1/4″ at the widest point and 4 3/4 across the base. There are no chips, cracks or damage of any kind. This is true Silicone Ware and is marked as such. Silicon Ware was peculiar to Royal Doulton. It is similar to stoneware with a different body and fired at a higher temperature making the production more expensive and the Silicon Ware is very sturdy. Size: Large, 6 1/2 High. Smuts held several offices including Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa and Commander in Chief of the South African Forces. Issued for only two years, this character jug was withdrawn from production after Smuts was defeated in the election of 1948, losing to the Afrikaner National Party. For sale are these stunning antique Corolian Ware jugs. Made by Royal Doulton Burslem. In a striking deep flow blue with hand painted flowers and gilt detail. They both have the same number RA17550D to the base. This is a Robert Allen design mark and dates them between 1892 – 1897. Although the shapes are identical the decoration is different to each. One of the jugs carries an additional number a8532. Corolian Ware was only made by Doulton between 1891 to 1902. In brilliant undamaged condition as you can see. The bases are a little crazed but they are otherwise so good for their age. Measure approx 13.5 x 9.5 cm. Thank you for looking.
