A striking, rare and highly decorative Art Nouveau stoneware jug or vase from the Royal Doulton Lambeth studio, beautifully modelled with flowing organic lines and an elegant band of stylised heart motifs. With its tall, sculptural silhouette and rich, jewel-like glazes, this is a piece that immediately draws the eye. This example carries the impressed Royal Doulton Lambeth mark to the base, along with model number 7760D, an incised “S”, and the artist’s initials “BN”, which are generally attributed to Bessie Newbery. Newbery was a highly regarded designer at the Doulton Lambeth factory from the late 19th century into the early 20th century, and is particularly celebrated for her confident, modern Art Nouveau designs featuring stylised natural forms. The bold hearts-and-leaves decoration, sweeping handle, and softly mottled ground glaze are all characteristic of Lambeth’s finest Art Nouveau output. I have been unable to find another example of this exact shape and model number currently recorded online, suggesting this form is at least very uncommon, and quite possibly a short-run or less frequently produced design.
